Week 3

Team F - 40
Team D - 38

We F-ed them up! Yes, folks, we took down the team that put up 82 points last week. It took tough defense, patient offense, and an amazing buzzer-beating Hamblett-to-Hamblett fast break. Team D was an interesting mix - six fairly athletic 20-somethings, one middle-aged Dr. J look-a-like, and one mentally retarded guy (I'm not being mean, he was mentally retarded, or something was wrong with him). We tore up their zone defense - Jefe, Oly, Big Hamblett, and a resurgent Will the "Stilt" owned the paint. Dirk Nowitzki... I mean... Wood shut down their biggest threat, and Ryan and I were able to handle their guards and hit our shots when the zone collapsed. It was an awesome effort, especially after a lackluster week 2.

The last couple minutes of the game warrant a play-by-play:
We held a single digit lead most of the game, until late in the second half, when Team D was able to tie it up. We retook the lead 38-34 with less than two minutes remaining. If I remember correctly, they scored and got fouled, missed the free throw, but got the rebound, scored and got fouled again, and missed the free throw again - a 4 point possession to tie it up. (Feel free to correct me, guys, if that sequence is inaccurate - I forget.) So we get the ball back with 15 seconds left, and Big Hamblett took the ball the full length of the court, ala Tyus Edney, except he dished to his bro, who laid it in AND got fouled! It was almost as nice as the Brazilian waitress who served us pizza and beer after the game. Two seconds left on the clock (the clock, by the way, is a girl counting down the time). Ryan missed the free throw, and they rebounded and called an immediate timeout. With one second on the clock, they inbounded, and Dr. J lofted a 3/4-court shot and nailed it... but the ref waved it off - they took too much time!!! It was unbelievable. What a victory!

Record: 2-1
Next opponent: an undefeated (2-0) Team A. Bring it!

Week 2 debacle

Team F - 30
Team G - 39

It disappoints me to report Team F's first loss of the season at the hands of a steroid-ridden Team G. It appeared that each Team G member had grown up on the rough streets of Quincy and subscribed to the "when in doubt, foul" school of basketball. One of them, Johnny Tattoos, had 10 fouls, most of them flagrant. Another Team G member went down with a knee injury and immediately requested an ambulance, only to walk off the court 2 minutes later and ask if he could "cancel that call." Classic. Needless to say, the game was scrappy. Overall, Team F was sloppy and caught some tough breaks, but it was a game we could have and should have won. Changes to the Team F game plan are in the works.

In other league news, Team D pounded Team E 82-32, and Team B handled Team C 71-58.

Record: 1-1

Week 1

Team F - 44
Team E -33

In its debut, Team F put forth an all-around solid performance against a scrappy, whiny, and inferior Team E. We shot out of the gates and led by about 16 at halftime. Our inside game is a force not to be stopped. With 6 guys over 6'0" tall, we expected to own the boards and that's exactly what we did. Unfortunately, we don't have official stats, but we must have out-rebounded them by 30. We are still working out the kinks, but everyone was awesome for the first time out there.

Record: 1-0
Next victim: Team G

The beginning of Team F

Jefe, Oly, Wood and I decided it was finally time to stop letting such talent go to waste and put together a baseketball team. Oly found a league at the Quincy Athletic Club, and we recruited Greg Hamblett and his brother, Ryan, to join us. QAC also placed Will "The Stilt" Becker on our squad - a 6'6" rebound machine.

Quick rundown of the league:
  • It's a small court in a small gym - so small that the walls are out of bounds. No joke.
  • 4 vs. 4
  • No 3-pointers.
  • 20 minute halves.
  • Games Every Tuesday night.
  • 12-game schedule.
We have our sights on the league finals scheduled for January 16th. Mark your calendars.
